Advance Steel – Managing your Project Migration to a New Product Version

It’s coming to that time of the year for new version releases of CAD products. As exciting as this may be, it usually leads to issues when upgrading projects to the new version, finishing projects or keeping versions in the previous copy. When facing this with Advance Steel, a little bit of project management will be needed for a smooth transition.

Having been in this situation many times, and being mindful of the versioning compatibility issues which can arise with Advance Steel that, moving forward, a couple of ground rules need to be established.

  • Current projects: Finish these in the version they were started in. Try to complete before you transition into the new version; this applies to all the documents created, as well as the model.
  • Completed projects: With these, back them up by the version type (2016, 2017 etc.) and store them by the version. As before, make sure you not only do this with the model but with all the associated files and structure to maintain the various links behind the project.
  • New projects: If the project is just starting and on a short timescale, you will need to decide on which platform you wish to use for the whole length of the project.

When to move to new version.

Well, it’s never the right time to change versions, but try to plan something: look at upcoming projects, do a test deployment on a single unit, test it with an existing model by creating a copy of that model, separate to the original file and test the aspects of the software migration using the various migration tools within the AS platform.

How to migrate a project between Advance Steel versions – Project conversion.

There is a tool within Advance Steel that will help you migrate a model and all the associated files, copy the existing folder to maintain the previous version and replicate new files in the New Version.

Convert project advance steel

This tool can be found on the AS tools palette, under the Tools tab > Convert Project.

Use this little-known tool to take existing projects that we need to move into the latest version. For example, if you were to go back and do some additional work, this tool creates a backup and a new model and all associate folder and file structure, whilst converting all the documents and model to the latest version. You can view a video of this process HERE.
