Autodesk Inventor - How to copy model properties to drawing properties automatically

We get this question a lot from customers especially those who use vault, how do I copy my model properties to the drawing properties automatically?
Not having properties in the drawing can make searching or identifying what a drawing might be difficult as you only have the file name to go from, in Autodesk Vault you have the ability to view and search properties of documents so we want to take advantage of this!

In this blog we will look at how to automate the process of copying properties into drawings!

There is a way!

Step 1:
Open your drawing template or create a new drawing


Step 2 - Choose your properties:
Access Ribbon: Tools tab Options panel Document Settings. In the dialog box, click the Drawing tab.

Step 3 - Use i-logic to automate the copy

3.1 Create i-logic rule to perform update

create rule3.2 Paste the following text into i-logic:
Dim oControlDef as ControlDefinition = ThisApplication.CommandManager.ControlDefinitions.Item("UpdateCopiedModeliPropertiesCmd")
oControlDef.Execute2(True)

3.3 Create event trigger

Step 4:
Save template or create new template and give it a go! If you have followed the steps above using the same event trigger your properties will get copied across when you place your first view and updated when a drawing view changes.

What else can I do to automate my daily tasks?

Whether you want automate 3D/2D data, properties input/output, documentation input/output, the list goes on, it can be achieved through i-logic when utilising Inventor or through programming. Any task you currently participate in that you find repetitive or time consuming can most likely be automated, have elements of it automated, or customised to provide you with more options or a streamlined worlflow.

Automation doesn’t stop at Inventor though you may find that your department or company as a whole have multiple software systems and processes that require communication of information between one another which is currently a manual process or again has repetitive and manual tasks within the respective software system, customization and programming can assist with these issues.
