There is a neat little add in tool called Inventor HSM engrave, which will create single line text, which can then be traced to create the engraving on the machined part.
Most people use AutoCAD to create the text with a simple font, and then explode the text to create single line geometry. After that the AutoCAD DWG file is imported onto the sketch of the Inventor model whilst in the 2D sketch. This gives you the geometry required to use the trace operation in Inventor HSM. However, this is a time consuming process, and the HSM add in is far more efficient.
To get the add in up and running, follow this simple process:
First you will need to download the Inventor HSM engrave tool: unzip and copy Autodesk.EngraveTextAddIn.Inventor.addin to C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Addins. Additionally, copy EngraveTextAddIn.dll, hsmworks_0.ttf and hsmworks_0_ORIG.ttf to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2017\Bin
After an Inventor HSM restart you should be able to see the following add-in at tools > add-ins.
Generate a new sketch, use points or edges to place the text.
Afterwards you could use a TRACE operation to engrave required text.
