Given there are a number of other 3D modellers in the market, you may receive 3D CAD data from time to time that has been modelled in a package other than Inventor. Whilst sharing and importing data in Inventor is quite robust, iIf it’s a sheet metal part naturally you may require a flat pattern of the model, especially if you’re manufacturing the parts in question.
A lot of people think it’s not possible to get flat patterns from data that hasn’t been modelled within inventor, but it is and there’s no need to re-model the file!
