Placing Coping On Top Of A Wall In Revit

You might already know that walls in Revit are system families, which means they exist in a project but can’t be saved as individual families (RFA). And you might already know the Wall tool in Revit allows us to edit and duplicate to create different wall types with different make up, materials and thickness. What you might not know is we can also edit any wall type to contain extra features such as skirting, dado, trunking, cornices, soldier courses and coping, these are all created using the sweeps tools.

For this tip, I am going to show you how to add coping to the top of a wall. This method also works for adding other features as well, such as the skirting, dado, trunking etc. Firstly, we need a wall type so either click on the wall tool and from the Type Selector and pick the wall type you wish to add coping to, or select a section of modelled wall in your project and then Edit Type.

I would always recommend to Duplicate the wall (so we don’t mess up the original) give it a name and then click Edit Structure.

In the Edit Assembly dialog box make sure the Preview is on and set to Section. Then click Sweeps.

Click Load Profile and browse to the profiles folder in the metric library, or to a folder with any profiles you have created yourself and load the required Coping profile in, then click Add and select the profile from the dropdown list.

You can set the material as required and set the position of the coping to Top, change the Offset if needed.

You can click apply to see the coping added to the preview to help with positioning it, when done click OK and OK.

You now have coping on the top of this wall type. More importantly everywhere you draw this type of wall it will have coping. Hope you found this Revit tip useful.
