Virtual Reality graitec

Here at Graitec Professional Services we have been busy developing our Virtual Reality system. We now have the ability to teleport around entire buildings, pick items up, import models with a menu system, change surface colours and finishes and explode models all in virtual reality. Some of the uses in different sectors of our business are described below.

Structural Steel

We have now the ability to bring an advance steel model straight into an environment and walk around the entire structure using a teleport system. This gives the advantage of seeing from a human’s eye level how the structure will look before being built. This is a great way to interrogate the model or see it in the intended environment, also it’s a great way to understand special awareness that you can’t get from seeing the model on a computer screen. Another use for VR is seeing if tools will fit into certain areas for maintenance. It’s better to iron these kind or problems out at the design stage than after construction has taken place.

We have also developed a product scene that any model can be brought into. The user can walk up to the item and pick it up, spin it around in their hand to really get a good look at all the detail. We can even explode the model in 3D space to see all the individual parts. We have a menu system in which the user can bring up a list of components and import them to the scene as well as being able to change colours and material by the touch of a button on the hand controls. Another great use of VR is with be-spoke product, the designer can now show the customer a car for example and configure the interior, wheels and colour etc. to the customer’s requirements before the manufacturing process begins. It’s like having a showroom in the office.

For this offering, we have as described before the use of a teleport system to navigate an entire model and also the ability to change surface colours and materials. If you don’t like the wood floor change it to tiles with one click. Add in furniture and arrange it to specified requirements. This is a great way to discuss interior design features or for space planning, the user can easily see if a ceiling is a bit too low and make the necessary changes. Sometimes the old way of producing images or renders on a screen or even a 3D flythrough just won’t give the customer the sense of the final design. With VR you are literally walking around inside the building making changes and seeing from eye view just what it will look like once complete.

With regards to retail one of the main benefits is space planning and line of site. Take the customers eye level point of view in VR and see if the store layout is to the correct requirements. Is the customer drawn into the store? If not, then arrange the shelving and display stands to suit in real time using the hand controls.

If you are reading this and think there may be some benefit to your company or design process, then why not come down to our office and have a go for yourself. Every person who has put the VR headgear on has been amazed. Alternatively, I will personally come to your office and set it up for a demonstration.
