Windows 10 has now been available for a year and as such, Microsoft have released quite an extensive update which they have called the Anniversary update.
The update will update Windows 10 from build 1511 to build 1607.
The Anniversary update is available through Windows Updates but Microsoft are rolling it out gradually so you may not see it immediately.
If you want to install it and it is not appearing in windows updates, you can click on the Learn More link at the bottom of the update page and this will open a website where you can download the update.
Some of the highlights of the update are listed below: -
Smarter Cortana – Cortana will now be available from the Windows lock screen and is more proactive and can give you a lot more information. If you are using an Android or Windows Mobile Device, Cortana will now integrate across your mobile and PC. It now also allows you to set reminders, timers etc.... Cortana can also give answers to simple questions without needing to be signed into a Microsoft account.
Windows 10 Themes – Windows 10 will get a dark theme and more theme options for customisation.
Microsoft Edge – Edge now finally supports browser extensions and so instantly becomes a lot more useful. If you found yourself needing to use Internet Explorer in windows 10 because Edge was very limited, it is worth trying Edge again now as it is much more integrated into windows 10 and will give a lot more features. It also now has pinned tabs, web notifications and if you have a touchscreen, swipe navigation.
Windows Hello – Windows Hello has been updated and now brings fingerprint authentication to apps and websites if you have a fingerprint sensor on your device.
Windows Ink – If you have a touch screen, Windows Ink allows you to use this in many apps for writing and drawing.
Wi-Fi Sense’s Password-Sharing Feature – This feature has been removed due to lack of people using it and it being seen as very controversial.
Windows Defender – Windows defender has been improved to allow it to be used as a second line defence against viruses if you already use an antivirus application. If an antivirus application is detected, it will allow you to enable defender in a mode called Periodic Scanning. This means that it will not run as a real-time protection as your existing antivirus is already doing this. However, it will periodically scan your pc to give you another layer of protection.
Linux – Windows 10 now has a bash shell for windows. This allows you to run Linux applications directly on Windows.
Start Menu – This has been redesigned to make things simpler and easier to use.
Windows Update – This has been revised and will now allow you to schedule a suitable time period when your machine is not being used e.g. out of work hours.
There are many other changes including: -
• Improvements to tablet mode
• Calendar integration on the taskbar
• Improvements to the lock screen
• More powerful battery options
• Apps can be associated with websites
• Blue Screen of Death now features a QR code you can scan with your phone in order to resolve
